Compliance Gap

The Compliance Gap is the space between the system you designed and the system people actually use. It almost always means the process doesn't match how the work really happens, so people route around it and back-fill the CRM later to keep the reports quiet.

What is Compliance Gap?

When a documented process gets ignored, the instinct is to read it as a discipline problem and push harder on enforcement. It's rarely discipline. Reps route around a process for the same reason water routes around a rock — the official path is slower than the real one.

Why does it happen?

Every retroactively logged deal, every skipped stage, is a rep telling you the map doesn't match the territory. Punishing them for it just teaches them to hide it better. The fix is redesigning the process so the compliant path and the fast path are the same path.

What breaks first?

Your reporting breaks first, before your revenue does. The numbers look fine until you make a real decision on them — a hiring plan, a board forecast — and discover the pipeline was thirty percent theater. By then the decision is already in motion.

Quick self-diagnostic

Pull CRM data on stage adherence for your last full quarter. If a large share of deals skipped stages or got logged retroactively, you have a compliance gap, not a discipline problem — the reps are telling you the process is wrong.

From the field

Taking that same infrastructure from tribal process to a real operating model cut time to market from 26 weeks to 12 and dropped the data error rate from 30 percent to under 1. None of it came from enforcing the old process harder. It came from redesigning it so the compliant path and the fast path were the same path.

Where this fits

Compliance Gap is the mid-tier pattern of the System layer in the GTM SCALER Assessment — the diagnostic for whether your go-to-market motion can scale. The assessment scores every layer, names the pattern under each, and tells you which one is holding you back the most.

Can your go-to-market motion actually scale?

The free GTM SCALER Assessment names the pattern breaking you first. 30 questions, ~10 minutes.
